| Last year, I found this trailer online (righthand side) about a mysterious street photographer who worked as a nanny in New York. At the time I was feeling a little disillusioned (as I do) by the bureaucracy attached to photography and art and this trailer provided an avenue for me to immediately romanticised the hidden life of this genius. Yesterday I went to see Finding Vivian Maier! The film documents John Maloof's journey to discover the identity of the artist behind his auction find. I loved it! Maloof discovers Vivian was a nanny and then goes about interviewing her employers, the children she took care of and people she came into contact with. He also visits archives to track her heritage and family background. The film reveals a complex Taxi Driver character as oppose to a Mary Poppins one. You leave the cinema with a realistic however awe filled view of this isolated undiscovered artist. Definitely worth watching! | |
