In August 2009, after leaving university, I volunteered on a collaborative project entitled the Staying Power Project, which is a collaboration between the Victorian and Albert Museum and the Black Cultural Archives, the projects aim was to acquire more photography documenting the Black British experience between the 1950s - 1990s. I was chosen to assist on this project on the merits of my final university project entitled " I became 'black' in London" which was a quote from Stuart Hall - one of the most celebrated Black social theorist of our time. Since, volunteering on the project Stuart Hall has sadly died and a film was made about his life, the Black Cultural Archives have moved from their humble dwelling in Othello road, kennington to their current dwellings in Windrush square, Brixton and I have had the privilege of doors opening as a result of having the project on my C.V. Although, I sadly missed the private view, I'm planning to visit both sites very soon to view the final exhibition and hopefully gain some inspiration for a new personal project.
