So after my camera obscura workshop on the 1st October I attended a workshop led by Victoria Burgher about the history of Canary Wharf. It has been 11 days and the impact of it has remained so I thought I'd share. Victoria had made moulds and cast pound signs out of sugar. She began the workshop by explaining how Canary Wharf was a privately owned spaced built upon the slave trade thus the sugar pound signs. | We took a walk across to a monument for Robert Milligan a plantation owner who spearheaded the campaign against the abolition of slavery. We had a discussion as to whether a statue (that was taken down however re-erected in 1997) should exist to to celebrate such a figure in history without any balance context of who he was and what his contribution to history was. After the discussion I noticed that I was deeply moved by the information received and felt as though I should do something. So this is my first step to action, small but at least its something, I guess. |
